The Artist and his Father in His Grandfather's Garden

Peter Layzell is a painter  represented by the Portal Gallery , London since 1998. He has had four solo exhibitions with the Portal; in 2001, 2003, 2005 and 2007 and has continued to participate in group shows there.

He was Artist in Residence at the Atkinson Gallery Southport in 2008, and was shortlisted for the Elizabeth Garrett-Anderson Memorial for the University College London in the same year.

His paintings of intensely realised portraits, still-lifes and narrative paintings have also been included in a number of national and international exhibitions. Laura Gascoigne, the art critic of the Spectator wrote: 'his paintings sometimes recall the candle-lit worlds of Georges de la Tour and Gerrit van Honthorst but his inspiration is rather more modern' (A singular Vision: Fifty Years of British Painting at the Portal Gallery,2009)

His painting 'Fathers and Sons'(see profile page)was selected for the 2010 BP Award(National Portrait Gallery,London and travelling).He has been a regular contributor to the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition since 1986.
